Sofía Segovia was born in Monterrey, Mexico. She studied communications at Universidad de Monterrey, thinking mistakenly that she would be a journalist. But fiction is her first love. A creative writing teacher, she has also been a ghostwriter and communications director for local political campaigns and has written several plays for local theater. Her novels include Noche de huracán (Night of the Hurricane), El murmullo de las abejas (The Murmur of Bees)—which was called the literary discovery of the year by Penguin Random House and named Novel of the Year by iTunes—and Huracán. Sofía likes to travel the world, but she loves coming home to her husband, three children, two dogs, and cat. She writes her best surrounded and inspired by their joyous chaos.

Una de las mejores novelas que he leído en los últimos años. Me recuerda CIEN AÑOS DE SOLEDAD, LA CASA DE LOS ESPÍRITUS, BALÚN CANÁN, y PEDRO PÁRAMO. En la larga tradición de lo real maravilloso carpenteriano, tal como lo definió en el prólogo de EL REINO DE ESTE MUNDO, esta novela nos describe a un personaje mágico real como lo es Simonopio, y sus abejas, que se comunican por los recovecos de la sangre. La familia Morales, de un pueblo llamado Linares en México, viaja de ida y de vuelta a Monterrey para contarnos de la Reforma Agraria a través de los ojos de un terrateniente que aprende a burlar las leyes del gobierno para preservar su tierra. Se relatan además los avatares de la influenza española y su impacto en Linares, en una época precaria de la historia mexicana. Sofía Segovia nos habla al oído en una conversación íntima como la del personaje narrador con un taxista que lo lleva en un viaje a la semilla, ya viejo, para recuperar ese murmullo de las abejas de Simonopio y darle sentido a su larga vida.

Manteniendo vivo el espíritu del realismo mágica, Sofía Segovia se luce con "El Murmullo de las Abejas" y desde el primer capítulo atrapa a cualquier amantes de este género, o de la literatura bien escrita. Me hace recordar a "Como Agua Para Chocolate", "La Casa de los Espíritus" y "Cien Años de Soledad", historias inmensas de generaciones de familias, todas muy latinoamericanas, muy tradicionales, muy nuestras.

¿Por dónde empezar a hablar de esta magnífica historia? ¿Nana Reja? ¿Simonopio? ¿Francisco padre, o chico? ¿Espuricueta? ¿Todos? Esta es una historia coral que va avanzando a pasos lentos, en cada capítulo van moviendo todas las fichas lentamente, como en un tablero de ajedrez. La narración tiene diferentes puntos de vista y se va moviendo a su ritmo pausado, explicado, encantador. Aunque es un poco predecible por partes, es una lectura atrapadora y encantadora, vibrante, difícil de dejar. No se siente la extensión del libro, en mi caso, solo el deseo de seguir leyendo y saber qué va a pasar.

Todo esto encapsulado en las diferentes generaciones de la familia Morales, que nos traen unas hermosas lecciones sobre el valor de la vida y el tiempo, sobre apegarse al pasado, la terquedad, el futuro, la hermandad, las cosas pendientes... Una gran pieza de literatura.

El audiolibro, narrado por Humberto Solórzano, es una decisión muy acertada. Su voz es la ideal para una narración emocionante y con mucho sentimiento.

Decir que “El murmullo de las abejas” me recuerda de “Cien años de Soledad,” y “La casa de los espíritus” es colocar la novela en muy distinguida compañía. Y la merece. Las tres novelas relatan grandes historias de varias generaciones de familias y el impacto de verdaderos sucesos históricos en las vidas de los personajes y en sus pueblos. Sin embargo, la mayor comparación viene siendo el uso del realismo mágico.

En el hermoso lenguaje de la autora Sofía Segovia, ¿cómo no vamos a sentir compasión por un bebé, y luego niño, físicamente diferente a los demás y raro por la manta de abejas que lo acobija? A través de los eventos y el punto de vista de varios narradores, nos damos cuenta de que lo bello de Simonopio lo trae por dentro. Como la niña Clara, en “La casa de los espíritus,” Simonopio cree muy naturales sus poderes. Como a Clara, frecuentemente, el presente le importa menos que a los demás. Ultimadamente, los dos son nobles ejemplos del amor por sus familias (en el caso de Simonopio, una no biológica).

La compleja trama y las múltiples historias entretejidas de “Abejas” me captivaron desde el principio, pero es el último cuarto del libro donde Segovia brilla con una sorpresa tras otra, y tensión cada vez mayor. En el estilo de Stephen King, temprano deja claro quiénes son el protagonista y antagonista y que los dos van inexorablemente en camino a una épica batalla. ¿Quién ganará y cómo cambiará la vida de todos los personajes? Como en la vida real, las respuestas son imposibles de predecir—aun para Simonopio.
