I really liked this murder mystery even though I am a beginner Spanish student and missed some of the finer points (had to use google translate and other sites). It's an intriguing story with the backdrop of when the fascists were going to take over in Barcelona- very real and interesting. There were lots of expressions and words I was unfamiliar with but since I love reading I didn't mind not understanding 100%

The novel is well described. If you didn't live the war it is incredible all the shame, terror and abuse comming from the faccist.
Inspector Mascarel is loyal to his position at all times, even though he was the only one in action at that time. It makes us wonder all the privilegies that we have now a days. Unfortunately war continues in this world full of misery, lack of trust and injustices .

I have been reading the adventures of Insp. Mascarell by Jordi Sierra and can only recommend them dearly. If you wish to follow the story of Barcelona after the civil war from the eyes of one of its witness there is no better fictional way. Suspense, well developed characters and great stories, do read Jordi Sierra's series.

A fabulous novel in beautiful Spanish. The Spanish is relatively easy compared to some other authors I've read; there were entire groups of pages where I knew every word. The book is permeated with the protagonist's sadness and at the same time is commitment to persevere. This is symbolic of Barcelona itself at that time in its history. I've ordered the second book in this series and can't wait to read it as well.

Fanaticos erráticos , acomodaticios,inescrupulosos y finalmente , victimas

El inspector Miquel Mascarell decide resolver una serie de asesinatos en los días previos a la entrada del ejército franquista en Barcelona, en enero de 1939. Novela bien escrita que mantiene el suspenso y la intriga hasta el último momento. Recrea convincentemente el ambiente de la ciudad ante la derrota, tanto en la descripción física de la misma, como en la semblanza de sus personajes. En contraste, los diálogos son demasiado secos y cortantes. Lectura entretenida.

It is a very interesting detective novel. It is set during the days prior to the Franco troops entering Barcelona, Spain. Very detailed description of the times and the author know how to navigate through the suspense of the novel. I recommend it if you like police investigating reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars um excelente retrato de um momento

Uma das melhores formas de repassar a história é, sem dúvida, recuperar os relatos de crimes que marcaram época. O crime que desafia o Inspetor Mascarel é, porém, menos notável que o momento em que ocorre. É o momento que o faz ganhar nossa atenção. Além da prosa de qualidade e a empatia que surgirá provavelmente em muitos com o dedicado Inspetor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great novel about honour, duty and survival.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 30, 2021
Over the last few years, I’ve been reading short stories and novellas for Spanish learners by writers such as Paco Ardit. This novel by Jordi Sierra was the first “proper” novel I have read in Spanish. If I say it was a struggle, that is a comment on the quality of my Spanish rather than the quality of the novel. I had to refer to my dictionary at least once a page, so about 300 times in a 280-page text. Annoyingly some of the words I didn’t recognise were not included in my comprehensive Collins Spanish dictionary, though I could generally guess the meaning from the context.
Enough of my failings as a Spanish learner. The novel itself is very good and well worth reading for the following reasons:
1. It’s set in Barcelona in January 1939 during the Spanish Civil War. The action takes place during the last four days of resistance before General Franco’s Nationalist forces took the city. I have been fascinated by the Spanish Civil War for forty years, but I’ve always found that many Spanish people still can’t talk about it or face up to it. Battles are still being fought, especially over the atrocities committed by both sides.
2. It has characters you care about, particularly the central character, Miquel Mascarell, his wife Quimeta, who is dying of cancer, and the ostensible victim, Patro Quintana.
3. The theme is disturbing: organised sexual abuse of teenage girls by a bunch of Fascist sympathisers who believe that their sins will be concealed when Barcelona falls.
4. The plot is simple, but the author cleverly conceals then reveals things as time ticks away – the title of the novel creates a sense of time running out as the Nationalists approach the city. Law and order have collapsed already and Miquel Mascarell is the only police detective who’s still doing his duty. The Barcelona in this novel is very different from the lively, joyful city I know. This Barcelona is bleak, cold, hungry and fearful.
This is a crime thriller, but it’s also a political book, which for me adds to its appeal. It’s about power and the abuse of power. It’s no coincidence that the paedophiles are businessmen who went to ground when the military rebels failed to seize power in Barcelona in 1936. They went to ground – literally – and spent the war holding paedophile orgies in the basement of a mansion in one of Barcelona’s posh suburbs. The paedophile ringleader, Pasqual Cortacans, believes he can commit rape and murder with impunity because he has money. As time ticks away and the Nationalists get closer it looks like he will get away with it.
My Spanish was just about good enough for me to discern a hint – it’s never stated – that Miquel Mascarell feels attracted to these girl-women, but his devotion to his wife and his sense of duty enable him to overcome any temptation and he behaves with honour throughout. I won’t spoil the plot. Suffice to say, no matter whether your Spanish is perfect or as bad as mine, it is worth reading to the very end.

Me gusta mucho la novela "policiaca" pero esta va mucho más allá, me ha mostrado lo duro que pudo ser el final de la guerra, y me ha hecho pensar en la estupidez humana, al no ser capaces de convivir disfrutando de lo que nos ofrece la vida, solo con algo de humildad y un poco menos de egoísmo.
Una gran novela, al menos para mí.
