Inspector Mascarel is loyal to his position at all times, even though he was the only one in action at that time. It makes us wonder all the privilegies that we have now a days. Unfortunately war continues in this world full of misery, lack of trust and injustices .
Pocos días , muchos conflictos y la foto de los protagonistas de siempre , en todos los países , en todos los bandos políticos.
Fanaticos erráticos , acomodaticios,inescrupulosos y finalmente , victimas

Enough of my failings as a Spanish learner. The novel itself is very good and well worth reading for the following reasons:
1. It’s set in Barcelona in January 1939 during the Spanish Civil War. The action takes place during the last four days of resistance before General Franco’s Nationalist forces took the city. I have been fascinated by the Spanish Civil War for forty years, but I’ve always found that many Spanish people still can’t talk about it or face up to it. Battles are still being fought, especially over the atrocities committed by both sides.
2. It has characters you care about, particularly the central character, Miquel Mascarell, his wife Quimeta, who is dying of cancer, and the ostensible victim, Patro Quintana.
3. The theme is disturbing: organised sexual abuse of teenage girls by a bunch of Fascist sympathisers who believe that their sins will be concealed when Barcelona falls.
4. The plot is simple, but the author cleverly conceals then reveals things as time ticks away – the title of the novel creates a sense of time running out as the Nationalists approach the city. Law and order have collapsed already and Miquel Mascarell is the only police detective who’s still doing his duty. The Barcelona in this novel is very different from the lively, joyful city I know. This Barcelona is bleak, cold, hungry and fearful.
This is a crime thriller, but it’s also a political book, which for me adds to its appeal. It’s about power and the abuse of power. It’s no coincidence that the paedophiles are businessmen who went to ground when the military rebels failed to seize power in Barcelona in 1936. They went to ground – literally – and spent the war holding paedophile orgies in the basement of a mansion in one of Barcelona’s posh suburbs. The paedophile ringleader, Pasqual Cortacans, believes he can commit rape and murder with impunity because he has money. As time ticks away and the Nationalists get closer it looks like he will get away with it.
My Spanish was just about good enough for me to discern a hint – it’s never stated – that Miquel Mascarell feels attracted to these girl-women, but his devotion to his wife and his sense of duty enable him to overcome any temptation and he behaves with honour throughout. I won’t spoil the plot. Suffice to say, no matter whether your Spanish is perfect or as bad as mine, it is worth reading to the very end.
Una gran novela, al menos para mí.
